The Campaign, a program of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, was begun in 1970 to fund projects such as “voter registration, community organizations, community-run schools, minority-owned cooperatives and credit unions, capital for industrial development and job training programs and setting up of rural cooperatives.” The Campaign’s Community Organizing grants support projects where poor and marginalized people join together to seek solutions to local problems and find ways to improve their lives and neighborhoods.
